Leveraging batteries as a backup technology has been around for well over a 100 years. A very convenient technology, yet it does come with some limitations. Batteries tend to fail with no visible external damage. Depending on the battery chemistry the measured voltage can be in specification while the loaded voltage is well below specification. As a result, multiple techniques for measuring the status of a battery have been developed. Storage Battery Systems (SBS) manufactures batteries and battery testing equipment. The SBS EQUALINK systems has been created to optimize charging, balancing and testing of battery based backup systems.
SBS support battery testing equipment for Lead Acid, Nickle Cadmium (NiCd), Nickle Metal Hydrate (NiMH) and Lithium-ion batteries. Their solutions support 2V, 4V, 6V, 12V and 16V configurations with up to 330 discrete batteries.
For systems monitoring multiple parameters and battery performance, integration with an HMS edge gateways allows consolidation into a single cellular enabled gateway.
When recording battery performance during charging and discharging, an electrochemical dynamic response signature can be documented for each battery. Over time this response signature can be used to detect a battery nearing the end of its lifecycle. Using this data to replace batteries reduces waste associated with battery replacement based purely on battery age and eliminates backup failures due to an undetected battery breakdown.
This system is cost effective for all battery deployments from a single battery solution to a large backup station.
