High galvanic isolation options for protecting CAN networks

This article describes the possibilities for a high galvanic isolation on the network to decouple and protect the CAN network from a failure in the battery network.

QUESTION

I need very high galvanic isolation on my network to decouple and protect my CAN network from failures in the battery system. What devices provide sufficient isolation?
 

ANSWER

Several of our devices offer different levels of galvanic isolation:

  • CAN‑CR100, CAN‑CR200, and CANbridge NT provide 1 kV galvanic isolation.
  • CAN‑CR120/HV offers 3 kV galvanic isolation.
  • CAN‑CR220 provides up to 4 kV galvanic isolation, which is sufficient for most applications requiring strong electrical separation.
     
For applications requiring even higher galvanic isolation, we recommend using two fiber‑optic repeaters, such as:
  • CAN‑CR210/FO
  • CAN‑CR110/FO

Optical transmission of CAN data offers an almost unlimited level of galvanic isolation, making it ideal for environments with high electrical stress or strict safety demands.
