Send SMS Messages Using the SN/RAM RS-232 Port

Abstract:

This configuration will allow you send SMS Messages via a device connected behind a Sixnet series SN or RAM via the serial RS232 port.

Use Case / Problem Solved:

Allow a 3rd party device to generate SMS messages by configuring your SN/RAM device to send them. You must have SMS feature enabled on your cellular account.

 

Step 1. In the Web GUI, Navigate to Admin>Package Installation

Step 2. Select the snpat01182016_SMS_via_TCPS_and_Serial.zip then click Install

Step 3. Once the install is finished make sure to look in the Installation history and see that the install was a success

Step 4. Navigate to Advanced>GWLNX>Install Configuration

Step 5. Under Manage GWLNX Configuration File, select the sms-send-recv-via-serial-port.cfg file, then click Install

Step 6. Once this install is complete you connect your serial device behind us with these settings

·         Baud Rate = 9600

·         Data Bits = 8

·         Parity = None

·         Stop Bits = 1

 

Step 7. Once your end device is connected serially to the SN/RAM, make sure the RS232 LED is illuminated.

 

Step 8. Then, simply make sure the end device can format the message sent to the SN/RAM as follows

TO=4445556666 MSG=TANK IS FULL

 

This is the area to input the phone number, ex. 5557775555

 

This is the area for you SMS message, ex. TANK IS FULL!

 

Note: For Crimson-based devices you must set this message up as follows:

PortPrint(4,"TO=5557775555\r\nMSG=My alarm!\r\n");
