Brownfield upgrade in a Dutch harbor: From instability to 24/7 reliability

In one of Europe’s busiest logistics hubs, a company operating in the Rotterdam harbor was facing recurring PROFIBUS communication issues on a critical crane. What began as intermittent dropouts quickly escalated into a risk for operational continuity — prompting a full investigation and a structured brownfield upgrade.

The Challenge

In port operations, uptime is crucial — even minor network issues can disrupt productivity and create costly delays.

The operator was experiencing recurring downtime, initially on a single crane. The underlying causes were multiple: high EMC noise, uncertified devices, poor network segmentation, and aging infrastructure.

Together, these factors led to unpredictable behavior, frequent dropouts, and a growing lack of confidence in the crane’s network performance.

The Solution

To eliminate the instability and ensure long‑term reliability, we carried out a phased brownfield upgrade focused on standardization, robustness, and continuous monitoring.

Our approach combines technology, expertise, and close collaboration with both the end customer and a certified installer.

Technical improvements included:

  • Complete renewal of PROFIBUS cabling across 17 cranes
  • Installation of EMC‑compliant cabling to reduce interference and signal reflections
  • Proper network segmentation using ProfiHubs (copper and fiber)
  • Deployment of Anybus ComBricks for 24/7 network monitoring
  • On-site service and commissioning performed by our Professional Services team

The key to Success: Knowledge Transfer and Alignment with HMS Professional Services

Our Professional Services experts don’t just offer a solution — they ensure the customer knows how to use it effectively and get the most out of it. This included:

  • Hands‑on training sessions
  • Toolbox meetings to standardize installation practices
  • Clear guidelines for correct stripping and installation of EMC PROFIBUS cabling

In this project, each crane was upgraded in controlled phases, audited daily, and fully certified to ensure consistent quality across the entire fleet.

The Result

The impact was immediate and measurable: the network is now fully stable, with zero downtime or dropouts since completion.

The operator now benefits from:

  • Reliable, predictable crane operations
  • Increased visibility through continuous monitoring
  • A standardized, future‑proof network infrastructure

Key figures:

  • 17 cranes upgraded
  • ~5 km of PROFIBUS cabling installed per crane
  • 25 Anybus ProfiHubs deployed per crane
  • 1 Anybus ComBricks unit per crane for continuous monitoring
  • Full audit and certification completed
