An internationally accredited four-day course covering PROFINET network installation, technology, troubleshooting, maintenance, and advanced PROFINET analysis and fault-finding.
Who should attend the course?
This combined 4-day course is ideal for anyone working with PROFINET at a technical level, including designers, commissioning engineers, maintenance technicians, automation engineers, and installers.
It provides a comprehensive foundation in PROFINET network principles, installation and commissioning best practices, network maintenance and troubleshooting skills, and advanced engineering techniques for live fault-finding and optimisation.
The course provides:
- Essential knowledge of PROFINET and Industrial Ethernet technology from basic to advanced levels.
- Best practices for commissioning, health-checking, and troubleshooting PROFINET networks.
- In-depth understanding of PROFINET network design, communication behaviour, and analysis techniques for resolving complex faults.
- Practical use of PROFINET diagnostic and monitoring tools to audit, maintain, and optimise networks.
- The required prerequisites and examinations for internationally accredited qualifications as Certified PROFINET Installer and Certified PROFINET Engineer from PI.
Prerequisites:
No prior PROFINET qualifications are required. The Certified PROFINET Installer and PROFINET Troubleshooting & Maintenance modules are included in the first two days of this combined course, fully preparing attendees for the advanced Certified PROFINET Engineer training on days three and four.
What will I learn on the course?
Days 1–2: Installer + Troubleshooting & Maintenance
- Techniques required for Industrial Ethernet and PROFINET to work reliably in industrial environments.
- Interference pickup (EMC), cable routing and earthing considerations, and earth potential issues and their avoidance.
- PROFINET conformance classes and network planning basics.
- Wiring and installation testing, common wiring and layout pitfalls.
- The importance of GSDML files, PROFINET device naming, and network configuration.
- Commissioning, maintenance considerations, and qualification criteria for PROFINET networks.
- Use of conformance class B switches and PROFINET monitoring tools to audit and maintain a network.
Days 3–4: Certified PROFINET Engineer
- Deep dive into Ethernet fundamentals: IEEE802.3, ISO/OSI model, TCP/IP, ARP, and network addressing.
- Network infrastructure: switches, routers, hubs, gateways, and firewalls in PROFINET environments.
- Switch features, industrial conformance classes, and advanced device name setting and management.
- Monitoring Ethernet traffic, using diagnostic tools and methods to analyse real network behaviour.
- Network topologies and design considerations for robust and efficient PROFINET installations.
- Practical fault-finding sessions using professional analysis tools to locate and resolve complex network issues.
